KUCHING: Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) may adopt a new mascot and battle cry as part of a rebranding process.
FAS might replace Bujang Senang (the killer croc from Batang Lupar) with the state bird Kenyalang (hornbill) as the team's good luck symbol and use 'Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban' (no retreat, no surrender) as the new rallying cry.
Moreover, the jersey colour at home matches will be yellow, a departure from the normal red while for away matches, it will still be red to follow the colours of the state flag.
FAS secretary Abu Bakar Marzuki said the state Premier League side, under a new managament comitee, was going through a 'rebranding' process in a bid to win back the fans and focus on its 'unity through football' theme.
"We are trying to create a new image this season to bring the people of Sarawak together through football, " he added.
FAS also has confidence in coach Robert Alberts to put up a spirited team of mostly young players with good work ethics and tactical know-how.
Meanwhile, a gala night dinner themed 'FAS Unity Nite' will be held on January 21 to raise funds for the association.
Artistes will be specially flown in for the occasion and the guests will include former Sarawak players with a role in the state's football history.
The Sarawak team will go on a statewide tour and a trip to Brunei from December 21-31. They stop at towns like Betong,Mukah and Bintulu befor going to Brunei and returning to Miri to play their last friendly on December 30.
Sarawak will open their Premier League campaign against Johor MBJB FC at State Stadium on January 9 next year and play away to Pahang Kuantan Port in Pahang on January 12 in their first two games. Their second home match will be against Kuala Lumpur Felda United FC on February 13.
Playing in the Premier League this season are Teregganu PBDKT, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Selangor PKNS, Harimau Muda, ATM, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur Felda, Pahang Kuantan Port, Johor MBJB FC, Selangor Proton FC, Pulau Pinang SDM Kepala Batas and Sarawak.
